The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, April 16, edition that the federal government is considering a social-media ban for kids, said Culture Minister Marc Miller, following a vote in favour of such a ban at the Liberal Party convention. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe reports that on Saturday, party members passed a non-binding resolution urging the government to set 16 as the minimum age for access to social media accounts. A ban could be an important tool but it's not a solution to the bigger problem of on-line harms, Mr. Miller said. "I do think it could be an important layer, but it has to be seen as that and not as the answer to everything. On-line harms don't end as soon as you turn 15 or 16 or 17," he said. Justice Minister Sean Fraser said the government is exploring various options and acknowledges party members' decisions, though it isn't obligated to follow them. "We would give it the consideration that it deserves, but we want to make sure that we have the full benefit of the deep policy advice from people whose full-time job it is to understand the consequences," he said. The EU has developed an age verification app that will be available for use soon, Reuters reported Wednesday.
