The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, Dec. 8, edition that in April, 2024, the federal government announced a plan for Canada to advance in the artificial intelligence race, including a $300-million fund to assist companies with the costs of building and operating AI models. The Globe's Joe Castaldo and Andrew Willis write that Ottawa announced in June, 2025, that the Compute Access Fund (CAF) was open for applications after consultations and a government transition. Last month, some applicants received unexplained rejections, while others were informed they were moving to the next evaluation stage for potential awards of $100,000 to $5-million. No funds have been disbursed, and the process may extend into 2026. The speed of government lags significantly behind the rapid developments in AI, leaving some Canadian entrepreneurs frustrated that Ottawa is too slow. They worry that this could hinder Canada s chance to catch up in the field. Expecting the government to keep pace with the fast-moving industry is a challenge, especially for the new AI Minister Evan Solomon's department, which is tasked with developing an AI strategy, a quantum strategy and enhancing digital sovereignty.
