The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, April 15, edition that Gildan Activewear paid nearly $27-million last year to chief executive officer Glenn Chamandy, who returned in May to lead the company (all figures U.S.). The Globe's David Milstead writes that combined with a $16-million severance payment for Vincent Tyra, who served as CEO for a little more than four months during the period when Mr. Chamandy left the company, as well as retention payments for other executives, the compensation costs of the Gildan leadership transition topped $45-million. The details of CEO payments were contained in the company's proxy circular released to shareholders in advance of its April 30 annual meeting. They put precise numbers on compensation matters that have appeared in past Gildan disclosures, as the company tallied the continuing costs of its shareholder fight. In its March annual report, Gildan estimates the proxy battle cost it $89-million over two years. The biggest chunk of Mr. Chamandy's $26.91-million in 2024 pay is stock awards valued at $23.05-million. Of that, Gildan considers $8.75-million to be his 2024 award and $13.12-million to be part of a new "aspirational incentive compensation plan."
