The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Wall Street's three major indexes closed higher on Tuesday after shares in chipmaker Nvidia shook off early losses and investors looked ahead to the Federal Reserve's policy meeting conclusion on Wednesday for clues on interest rate policy. A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that Canada's main stock index also rose, helped by higher oil prices and a sharp increase in the shares of Gildan Activewear, but the index's gains were kept in check by weakness in the materials sector. Shares in Nvidia pulled out of the red to close up 1 per cent after it revealed pricing and shipment plans for its hotly anticipated Blackwell B200 artificial intelligence chip, which it says could be 30 times faster than current chips. Wedbush Securities director Michael James attributed Tuesday's gains to improving sentiment after Nvidia's shares turned around along with bullishness about the economy's direction. Cetera Investment Management's Gene Goldman says: "There's optimism that the Fed's not going to surprise us a lot on Wednesday. We think three cuts are still on the table [for this year]." The TSX materials sector lost 1.3 per cent as copper and gold prices slipped.
