The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday edition that Canada's top executives are increasingly opting to be paid up front.
The Globe's Jameson Berkow writes that cash compensation for the leaders of Canada's 100 largest publicly traded companies surged in 2025, according to The Globe's annual review of chief executive officer pay packages. Median annual bonus levels for CEOs rose more than 27 per cent to nearly $2.2-million last year, while longer-term incentives such as stock awards declined from 2024 levels.
Patrick Dovigi, CEO of waste management giant GFL Environmental, had the largest bonus of any Canadian executive in 2025. At more than $9.9-million, his bonus was only slightly below the $10.3-million in median total compensation among the top 100.
Mr. Dovigi was also Canada's highest-paid executive in 2025 by a dramatic margin. He received more than $230-million in total compensation last year, nearly four times that of RB Global CEO Jim Kessler, who was the second-most highly-paid executive in Canada in 2025 with a pay package of roughly $60.2-million.
Nearly half of Mr. Dovigi's compensation, about $108.3-million, came from "all other compensation," rather than typical salary, bonus or stock options.
