The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, June 18, edition that a "foreign entity" has hired gunmen to target synagogues in Toronto, according to Ruby Sahota, Secretary of State for Combatting Crime, speaking in the House of Commons. The Globe's Matthew Frank and Marie Woolf write that Ms. Sahota's comment came during a discussion on the government's lawful-access bill, which would allow police and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service to access surveillance and monitoring from Internet companies. Ms. Sahota said the shooters behind the recent incidents "were paid-for hires, hired by a foreign entity." She argued that passing the bill would mean fewer victims of such crimes. Police said the group's targets have included local businesses such as GFL Environmental, synagogues and the city's United States Consulate. On Tuesday, Toronto Police Service Chief Myron Demkiw said the gunmen are being recruited on-line and offered payments if they film themselves engaging in the shootings. The chief said investigators are still trying to determine who is paying for the attacks.
