The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, June 13, edition that an 18-year-old Toronto man, Sheldon Tracy-Stewart, has been charged with 11 counts, including shooting at the U.S. consulate in March and possession of a firearm. The Globe's Patrick White and Katherine Blaze Bam write that this incident is linked to a broader terrorism investigation that recently escalated, resulting in the death of a Toronto police officer during a raid. It is also linked to shootings at properties owned by GFL Environmental.
Police allege that Mr. Tracy Stewart fired a handgun at Toronto's U.S. consulate on March 10, endangering Consul-General Baxter Hunt, who is designated as an internationally protected person (IPP). Under the Criminal Code, attacking the premises of an IPP can lead to a prison sentence of up to 14 years.
There were no reported injuries, but investigators said at the time they were treating the case as a national security incident.
The investigation progressed on Thursday with coordinated arrests related to the consulate shooting. During a raid, Constable Marc Pinizzotto, 43, was shot and killed. Police have charged 19-year-old Nicholas Bennett with first-degree murder in connection with his death.
