Globe says crime network allegedly targeted GFL

2026-06-12 05:08 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that a police raid in Toronto that left an officer dead targeted suspects linked to a U.S. consulate shooting and is part of a larger investigation into a network of shooters-for-hire. The Globe's Colin Freeze and Molly Hayes write that this network is also linked to shootings at properties owned by GFL Environmental, and various residential and tow-truck locations. U.S. prosecutors connected the consulate shooting to an alleged Iraqi terrorist linked to Iran's Revolutionary Guard, who was arrested in Turkey in May and is in U.S. custody. Police did not share details on potential links to that case. The Toronto Police Service identified the slain officer as Constable Marc Pinizzotto, a 43-year-old member of the Emergency Task Force. Police will be charging 19-year-old Nicholas Bennett with first-degree murder in connection to the officer's death. Officers are looking for another suspect, 19-year-old Zara Jabbi, who they say is wanted in connection to the consulate attack. GFL and its sister company, Green Infrastructure Partners, have experienced multiple violent incidents over the past two years, including gunfire aimed at company executives' homes and properties.
