The Vancouver Sun reports in its Monday edition that B.C.-based FPX Nickel is sitting on what could be the province's first big nickel mine, in the central Interior. The Sun's Derrick Penner writes that nickel is in high demand, a so-called critical mineral in the transition to low-carbon energy. The company has been included on a new advisory committee to help the B.C. Ministry of Energy and Mines develop a strategy to capitalize on the province's mineral wealth. China has been the leader in establishing secure supply chains for critical minerals. "For better or worse, it's incumbent on governments to do the same in the Western world to develop these sorts of co-ordinated industrial strategies that involve multiple pieces of that supply chain as well as the local community aspect," said FPX chief executive officer Martin Turenne. B.C. is working on its strategy. The strategy leads with advancing reconciliation with indigenous peoples, a main commitment of the government's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act. B.C. is now collecting views for its discussion paper at the same time a first nations critical minerals strategy is also being developed through workshops with B.C. indigenous communities.
