The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that to get its stock moving again, Fairfax Financial Holdings will have to step up. The Globe's David Berman writes that the stock's three-year rally saw a 320-per-cent increase from October, 2022, to early 2026, but recent downward shifts may benefit latecomers. Fairfax is modelled on Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway. Founder Prem Watsa says: "There's no business like the insurance business, if you can manage it properly. That's allowed us to compound close to 20 per cent over 40 years." The investment decisions made with a portfolio valued at nearly $75-billion (U.S.), at the end of 2025, certainly attract attention. Last week, Fairfax said it was buying a controlling interest in IDBI for $5.6-billion (U.S.), the sixth-largest private Indian bank, based on assets. Earlier in October, Fairfax backed the Weston family's acquisition of The Boots Group, the British drugstore chain, by taking a 50-per-cent stake. In August, Fairfax completed a takeover of Andrew Peller, the Canadian winemaker. Also that month, it sold its remaining shares in BlackBerry, ending a 16-year investment. None of these developments has lifted investor sentiment toward the stock.
