The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, Dec. 30, edition that its Megastar portfolio outperformed the market by 9.4 percentage points since last year. The Globe's Norman Rothery writes that Fairfax Financial Holdings was included in last years Megastar portfolio and remains on it for this year. It is one The Globe's top 20 picks for 2024. Fairfax Financial is a property and casualty insurance-focused conglomerate based in Toronto run by chief executive officer Prem Watsa in a manner similar to Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway. Fairfax's shares shot up 52 per cent over the past year on strong book value growth. Nonetheless, the stock still trades near book value and at just six times forward 12-month earnings estimates. The Globe gives Fairfax Financial five stars for momentum and value this year. The Globe reported on Oct. 31 that Scotia Capital rated Fairfax Financial "sector outperform" when it was worth $1,146.60. The Globe reported on Nov. 2 that National Bank rated Fairfax Financial "outperform." It was then worth $1,160.69. The Globe reported on Nov. 7 that RBC Capital analyst Scott Heleniak had reiterated his "outperform" call for Fairfax Financial when it could be had for $1,225.23.
