Globe says feds okay Fission Uranium sale to Paladin

2024-12-19 08:07 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday edition that Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne has approved Australia's Paladin Energy's takeover of Canada's Fission Uranium, but he has imposed several conditions aimed at limiting China's access to uranium mined in Canada. The Globe's Niall McGee writes that Paladin reached a friendly agreement in June to buy Fission, based in Kelowna, B.C., in an all-stock transaction worth $1.14-billion. Fission is developing the Patterson Lake South uranium project in the Athabasca basin region of Saskatchewan, which is estimated to hold 5 per cent of global supply of the nuclear fuel. Paladin had hoped to close the deal by the end of September, believing it would not raise any red flags. But Mr. Champagne ended up conducting a lengthy national security review, culminating in an approval decision announced by Paladin late Wednesday. Under scrutiny by the minister was significant Chinese influence on both sides of the deal. Paladin said that it has agreed to not sell any uranium produced at the Saskatchewan project to any party in China. The only exception is the existing contractual obligations to CGN, which will last for three years out of the projected 10-year mine life.
