The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Aug. 20, edition that Prime Minister Mark Carney has urged premiers to restock American alcohol and revise procurement policies that exclude United States companies, as Canadian and U.S. negotiators discuss remaining tariffs on key industries. The Globe's triple-bylined item led by Mark Rendell reports that President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he had reached a tentative trade deal with Ottawa and postponed the implementation of punishing new tariffs on Canadian goods for three days. The announcement, made just two hours before the tariffs were to take effect, provided temporary relief in a trade standoff that began when Mr. Trump threatened 50-per-cent tariffs on an additional $20-billion (U.S.) of Canadian goods. Negotiators were still discussing tariff relief for key Canadian industries on Wednesday, as shared by premiers Scott Moe of Saskatchewan and Tim Houston of Nova Scotia, who were briefed by Mr. Carney. "They're still finalizing the exact tariff amounts," Mr. Houston said, referring to sectoral tariffs imposed on several major Canadian industries last year under Section 232 of the U.S. Trade Expansion Act.
