The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that Beijing's top diplomat, Wang Yi, visited Ottawa and suggested that Canada could double its exports to China by 2030. The Globe's Steven Chase writes that Mr. Yi's visit included talks with Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, emphasizing the need for Canada to pursue "strategic independence" from the U.S. Ms. Anand said that Canada aims to increase trade with China by 50 per cent over the next four years while safeguarding national security. The Chinese Foreign Minister said he was even more bullish than Ms. Anand about the growth of Canadian exports to China. U.S. President Donald Trump has criticized deals made between Mr. Carney and Chinese President Xi Jinping. In January, Canada diverged from the U.S. by agreeing to lower tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles from the 100-per-cent levy imposed in 2024. The deal with Beijing allows China to send 49,000 EVs in 2026, a number that will rise in future years. Beijing, in turn, agreed to cut retaliatory tariffs on items, such as canola and seafood and other products. On Friday, both Ms. Anand and Mr. Wang committed to "regularizing annual foreign ministers' meetings" as part of this new relationship.
