The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that with the U.S. Supreme Court's move against President Donald Trump's tariffs, the question is how, or will, the United States refund more than $130-billion (U.S.) in collected duties? The Globe's Andrew Galbraith writes that Mr. Trump quickly announced plans to reimpose tariffs through other means, but this did not resolve the refund process, which Justice Brett Kavanaugh said would be a "mess." He wrote, "The [U.S.] may be required to refund billions of dollars to importers who paid the tariffs, even though some importers may have already passed on costs to consumers or others." IG Wealth's Pierre-Benoit Gauthier said the most likely outcome for U.S. companies seeking refunds would be "a long legal and administrative process," which large companies were likely well-equipped to handle, but which could put smaller importers at a disadvantage. Mr. Gauthier said, "The legal costs of trying to get these refunds might end up being worse than the [tariff] bill itself." Mr. Trump said Friday that the Supreme Court's lack of clarity on the already collected money means U.S. companies seeking refunds will need to sue the government to see if they can get their funds back.
