The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, Jan. 17, edition that Prime Minister Mark Carney's recent trip to Beijing aimed to find new markets for Canadian businesses. The Globe's guest columnist John Rapley writes that the agreement announced on Friday to lower tariffs is positive news. It will boost canola exports from Canada while permitting some Chinese electric vehicles into the Canadian market, marking a significant achievement and opening new opportunities. Canada should view China's renewable energy and automotive sectors as opportunities for growth rather than threats. By forging partnerships, Canadian companies can expand into new markets. Collaborating in renewable energy is a positive step forward. There is cautious optimism that deeper ties in this sector will not result in Canada being overwhelmed by cheap Chinese imports. The EU and China have agreed on a minimum pricing scheme for Chinese EVs, and China plans to end rebates on solar panel and battery exports. While the U.S. tightens its trade stance, China seems to be easing. Mr. Carney is capitalizing on this opportunity. Were Canada to now advance its technology collaboration with China, it could potentially learn a lot in areas where China excels.
