The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Jan. 8, edition that the U.S. Supreme Court is set to issue rulings on cases with significant national and global implications, including the legality of President Donald Trump's sweeping global tariffs.
A Reuters dispatch to The Globe reports that the court may release decisions on argued cases during a scheduled sitting on Friday.
Mr. Trump's tariffs are among the most closely watched cases awaiting decisions from the top U.S. court, potentially impacting the global economy and testing presidential powers. During the Nov. 5 court arguments, both conservative and liberal justices questioned the legality of the tariffs imposed by Mr. Trump under a 1977 law intended for national emergencies. The case involves Mr. Trump's appeals after lower courts ruled his use of that law exceeded his authority.
Mr. Trump has continued to express concern about the possibility of losing the case. On Friday, Mr. Trump said in a social media post that such a ruling would be a "terrible blow" to the United States.
He said, "Because of Tariffs, our Country is financially, AND FROM A NATIONAL SECURITY STANDPOINT, FAR STRONGER AND MORE RESPECTED THAN EVER BEFORE."
