The Globe and Mail reports in its Thursday, Jan. 8, edition that Canada's auto industry faces uncertainty due to tariffs and trade issues. The Globe's guest columnist Brian Kingston writes that we urgently need a comprehensive plan to safeguard and support this vital sector.
Auto manufacturers have a long history in Canada, with Ford, General Motors and Stellantis assembling over 100 million cars since 1945. They are the largest employers in the sector.
The sector remains essential to our industrial base. Surviving the latest challenges from U.S. tariffs requires full co-operation.
Action is needed now to strengthen the auto industry and enhance our competitiveness amid trade uncertainty, instead of waiting for Ottawa to address U.S. Section 232 tariffs and renew our trade agreement.
We need a regulatory environment that encourages investment. Repealing the federal electric-vehicle sales mandate, the Electric Vehicle Availability Standard (EVAS)' should be our top priority.
EVAS phases out the sale of the very vehicles manufactured in Canada today. Mandating higher sales of zero-emission vehicles forces auto companies to limit and eventually stop selling internal combustion engine and hybrid vehicles made in Canada.
