The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday, Nov. 24, edition that the MAGA flashover affecting Canada-U.S. trade relations is fading due to America's affordability crisis and political fatigue. Globe columnist John Turley-Ewart writes that President Donald Trump's job performance has record disapproval among core supporters, with 76 per cent of U.S. voters viewing the economy negatively and blaming Mr. Trump. To gain support, Mr. Trump is lifting tariffs on 200 food items, pledging $2,000 to lower and middle-income Americans, and seeking flexibility on steel and aluminum tariffs affecting the U.S. auto sector. Prime Minister Mark Carney's quiet approach to trade negotiations is effective as Mr. Trump's popularity wanes. Supporting the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement can help Canada to address America's affordability crisis. Canadians may not realize the similar struggles in the U.S. Reports show declining discretionary spending, an increase in home-cooked meals and more Americans struggling to pay essential bills. American voters could do for Canada what Mr. Carney could not do himself: drive the U.S. administration back to the table with a better deal for Canada that helps them address their cost-of-living issues.
