The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Nov. 21, edition that various sectors, including airlines, manufacturers, vintners, parcel companies, restaurateurs, cattlemen, miners and tiremakers, have petitioned the Trump administration to maintain North American free trade. The Globe's Nathan VanderKlippe writes that in mid-September, the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) started a consultation process on the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, opening an on-line portal for public comments ahead of a joint review set to begin next year. The Trump administration has overseen the largest increase in U.S. tariffs in nearly a century. Over 1,500 submissions to the USTR show companies and industry groups urging the administration to maintain the free movement of goods across the continent. "Preserving the architecture of USMCA is crucial," states the Coalition of Services Industries, which includes major U.S. credit-card and retail firms. "The integrated North American market is key to American manufacturers' success," warns Whirlpool, noting that foreign companies could seize market share from U.S. goods without it. The USMCA deal is vital for capital planning, according to MEMA, the vehicle suppliers association.
