The Financial Post reports in its Wednesday, Oct. 29, edition that Ontario Premier Doug Ford irritated President Donald Trump with a 60-second ad using Ronald Reagan's words to criticize tariffs. A Bloomberg dispatch to the Post reports that Mr. Ford also expressed his frustration with Mr. Trump's threats to impact Canada's vital auto industry. On Monday Mr. Ford said: "Our goal is to make sure that we get a fair deal, not a one-sided Donald Trump deal. And I'm focused on auto." The television ad aimed to highlight trade barrier concerns. Bloomberg says the ad was very successful. However, on Thursday Mr. Trump halted U.S.-Canada trade talks and announced a 10-per-cent tariff increase on Canadian goods. He expressed his frustration again on Monday, stating he would not meet with Prime Minister Mark Carney for some time. From Mr. Ford's perspective, Canada risked securing a poor short-term deal focused on reducing steel tariffs while leaving the auto industry vulnerable to U.S. attacks. On Monday, auto-sector officials warned about the bleak future of the Canadian industry if the Trump administration maintains tariffs that increase costs for foreign manufacturers selling in the U.S. market.
