Globe says Ford, rivals warn Cdn tariffs will hurt

2025-10-27 07:01 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday, Oct. 25, edition that Ottawa's decision to impose tariffs on some vehicle imports from GM and Stellantis is expected to harm Canada's manufacturing sector and deter investments, say the Detroit Three automakers. The Globe's Eric Atkins writes that Ottawa announced plans to reduce the number of vehicles that can be imported tariff-free following production cuts and shifts to the U.S. Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne expressed the government's disappointment with Stellantis and GM's actions. Brian Kingston, president of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers' Association, which represents GM, Stellantis and Ford in Canada, called Canada's retaliation "an unforced error at the worst possible time." He said, "We share the government's goal of protecting Canada's auto industry and its workers." Tariffs on automakers already facing pressure from U.S. trade policies worsen the situation. In response to President Donald Trump's 25-per-cent tariffs on imported vehicles, Canada introduced a tariff remissions plan for domestic automakers. Cars imported from the U.S. remain tariff-free if production quotas in Canada are met, though details of the agreements are confidential.
