The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, Oct. 21, edition that President Donald Trump aims to boost U.S. manufacturing and would prefer that Canada exports no cars, car parts, steel, lumber or certain agricultural products to the U.S. The Globe's Tony Keller writes that Mr. Trump views trade as a zero-sum game, seeing exports as winning and imports as losing. He may want to block imports and promote U.S. manufacturing, but his administration must face reality. By the end of the month, U.S. automakers will have paid about $10-billion in tariffs, burdening American manufacturers and car buyers. This will likely lead to lower profits for automakers and higher prices for consumers. Tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum and lumber raise prices for American vehicles, home construction and renovations. Using tariffs to restrict Canadian car and car parts exports makes U.S. vehicle manufacturers less efficient. If the Trump administration is intent on harming the continental automobile industry, it has the power to do so, which would ultimately hurt American consumers and reduce the industry's efficiency and competitiveness. However, if Washington is willing to accept these downsides, the President's goals could be achieved.
