A Globe editorial says Canada's automotive strategy faces another setback, as federal and provincial governments invest heavily and implement new regulations in a struggling effort to boost jobs and develop a cutting-edge electric vehicle industry. The move also took Ottawa and Ontario by surprise. The federal government is now threatening to sue Stellantis. The notion of using Canadian minerals to build EVs, create quality jobs and reduce emissions is appealing, but ultimately unrealistic. It has been sustained by ongoing subsidies, restrictions on gas-powered vehicles and tariffs against affordable Chinese competition. Restructuring the economy so companies are not relying on handouts and are instead forced to innovate and become more efficient is better for the economy, and cheaper for taxpayers. Prime Minister Mark Carney discussed the need for a competitive corporate tax system with business leaders and has a chance to influence the upcoming federal budget, which would be a better approach than increasing funds for Canada's stalled EV strategy.
