The National Post reports in its Saturday edition that on Tuesday Stellantis said it will move production of the Jeep Compass from Brampton, Ont., to the Belvidere assembly plant in Illinois, suggesting that U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick was serious when he told a business audience that Canada eventually will not make cars and should think about where else it can create jobs and prosperity. The Post's John Ivison writes that the Liberal government will hold automakers accountable for commitments made to secure funding under Canada's Strategic Innovation Fund. Industry Minister Melanie Joly warned Stellantis that it would be "in default" of federal funds if it does not keep the Brampton plant central to its operations. Mr. Ivison says Prime Minister Mark Carney's bully pulpit is no match for U.S. President Donald Trump's, and investment is likely to continue to flow south. Mr. Trump has said Canada is going to be "very happy" with the deals that emerge and Canadians will "love us again." The qualifier, however, is autos. As Mr. Trump said in May, "We don't really want cars from Canada." China now says it is prepared to drop its tariffs on Canadian canola, if Ottawa rethinks the tariff on its electric vehicles.
