The Financial Post reports in its Thursday edition that Ottawa is under pressure to revise its policy requiring automakers to meet minimum electric vehicle sales. The Post's Gabriel Friedman writes that Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers' Association, representing three U.S. automakers in Canada, launched a campaign and petition on Monday urging Ottawa to quit the policy. On Tuesday, 40 EV industry executives signed an open letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney urging him to "stay the course" while making "reasonable adjustments" to EV sales requirements. The policy mandates that 20 per cent of new vehicles sold in Canada in 2026 be zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs), but the PM paused it for a year and ordered a 60-day review. EV sales dropped from an average of 13.7 per cent of new vehicle sales in 2024 to just 7.7 per cent in July. "The regulation demands impossible EV sales targets without first addressing the key barriers to consumer adoption," the CVMA, which represents Ford, General Motors and Stellantis, said in its petition. The EV sales mandate, known as the electric vehicle availability standard, also calls for 60 per cent of all new vehicles sold in Canada to be ZEVs in 2030 and 100 per cent by 2035.
