The National Post reports in its Tuesday, Sept. 9, edition that Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers' Association president Brian Kingston wants Ottawa to be "crystal clear" about its 100-per-cent tax on Chinese electric vehicles. The Post's Stephanie Taylor writes that Mr. Kingston says allowing China's electric vehicles into the market also puts the North American industry at a disadvantage, given the billions worth of subsidies Beijing has poured into developing its market, the likes of which "you will never see in North America." There also remain concerns over China's labour practices and poor environmental regulations. Mr. Kingston says: "I think the government needs to be crystal clear on what its intention is with respect to maintaining the Chinese [EV] surtax, particularly given where we stand in our negotiations with the United States. The surtax is up for review this month and I'm expecting a clear statement from the government that they intend to continue to keep it in place." Western premiers are urging Ottawa to remove its surtax on Chinese EVs after China imposed a 76-per-cent tariff on canola seed, seen as retaliation for Canada's 100-per-cent EV surtax from last October.
