The Financial Post reports in its Friday, Oct. 20, edition that in a legal claim filed Tuesday with the Ontario Court of Justice, Metro -- one of the alleged members of the Canadian bread price-fixing cartel -- aggressively and categorically rejects all charges that it was involved in a bread price-fixing regime. The Post's Terrence Corcoran writes that Metro states that the Weston food empire "falsely" implicated Metro in its price-fixing schemes. According to the document, filed as part of an Ontario class-action suit against the major grocery companies, Metro states that it "and other retailers" are in fact the victims of the self-protecting Weston food companies (including Loblaw, George Weston, Weston Foods and Weston Bread). The Weston companies, said Metro, "conspired with one another to falsely represent to the public and to the Commissioner of Competition that other retailers and their parent companies, including Metro, were participants in the conspiracy to which they were apparently confessing." In aggressive accusatory language, Metro claims that the Weston companies dragged Metro and other retailers into the price-fixing scheme to protect the Loblaw brand.
