NP says PM using Loblaw, rivals as scapegoats

The National Post reports in its Thursday edition that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has summoned Canada's captains of industry to Parliament Hill to explain how they run their businesses. The Post's Jesse Kline writes that in this case, it is the chief executive officers of Canada's major grocery retailers who are being used as scapegoats for a government that seems unable to bring inflation under control. Last week, Mr. Trudeau told Canada's five leading supermarket chains to come up with a plan to rein-in food prices by Thanksgiving, or "there will be consequences." The CEOs are expected to make their way to Ottawa on Tuesday for a meeting with Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne. Mr. Champagne said last week: "It's not an invitation. We told them to be in Ottawa next week." What exactly the grocery executives are supposed to do to bring down prices that are largely out of their control is anyone's guess. Mr. Kline sees the Trudeau Liberals only making things worse, as they move ahead with new nutritional warning labels, restrictions on fertilizer use, as well as new clean-fuel standards and clean-energy regulations -- all of which will make groceries even more expensive than they currently are.
