The Financial Post reports in its Wednesday, Sept. 20, edition that David Sobey, a former chief executive officer and chairman of the Sobeys grocery store chain, has died. A Canadian Press dispatch to the Post reports that Mr. Sobey was 92 years old. Empire, the parent company of Sobeys, says Mr. Sobey helped grow the regional player built by his father into a national food retailing and distribution business. Empire CEO Michael Medline called Mr. Sobey an incredible retailer, business leader and mentor. Mr. Sobey served as vice-chairman and CEO of Sobeys from 1982 to 1986 and as chairman and CEO from 1986 to 1995. He was chairman from 1995 until 2001 when he retired and was appointed chairman emeritus of Sobeys. Mr. Sobey retired from the Empire board of directors in 2015.
