The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that Emera plans a friendly, $14.3-billion, all-stock offer for Atco's Canadian Utilities. The Globe's Emma Graney writes that chief executive officer Nancy Southern has presided over Atco since 2003, succeeding her father, who died in 2016. Atco has subsidiaries operating in more than 100 countries, encompassing engineering, logistics, energy systems, construction and utilities -- though it still may be best known for the grey, white and yellow trailers that serve as temporary offices and worker housing. All told, Atco's various entities bring in roughly $5-billion in annual revenue. The plan under the Emera deal is for Atco's housing, defence and industrial businesses to be spun off into a new public company. Ms. Southern will stay on as chair and CEO of that company, which will keep the Atco name and remain based in Calgary. For each existing Atco share, investors will receive 0.865 of an Emera common share and one share of the new company. The deal is a win-win for Atco, Ms. Southern said. Investors get the optionality of two different shares, and Canadian Utilities merged with Emera will be the kind of pure-play business that analysts traditionally prefer.
