The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Eldorado Gold's chief executive officer and board chair announced their retirements on the same day, triggering a succession plan amid the company's takeover of Foran Mining. The Globe's Tim Kiladze writes that in February, Eldorado announced a $3.8-billion deal to acquire Foran, integrating its McIlvenna Bay copper and zinc project in Saskatchewan into Eldorado's gold portfolio. However, investor confusion led to a decline in both companies' share prices. A shareholder vote on the deal is slated for April 7. Eldorado recently released voting materials, announcing that CEO George Burns will retire in the third quarter and board chair Steven Reid will step down at the 2027 annual meeting. Eldorado president Christian Milau will succeed Mr. Burns as CEO. He is the former CEO of Equinox Gold and joined Eldorado in September, 2025. At the time, Eldorado's board chair said the company had been planning for its next leg of growth and had conducted a comprehensive search to someone with the right blend of experience, vision, and leadership. While Mr. Milau's eventual transition to CEO was expected the timing of the announcements in the middle of an acquisition is unusual.
