The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday edition that delivery apps are expanding beyond food, promising to bring various products to your doorstep. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe reports that during the COVID-19 pandemic, many Canadians adapted to having groceries and takeout delivered, which helped these apps thrive. Although food delivery growth has slowed, companies are now partnering with retailers like Dollarama, PetSmart and Sephora to drive expansion. Vince Sgabellone from Circana notes that calling them food delivery apps is outdated, as their scope now includes more than just takeout. For example, Skip, a Canadian delivery app, rebranded itself last year, dropping "The Dishes" from its name to reflect its broader focus. Paul Sudarsan, senior vice-president of partnerships at Skip, noted that consumers were looking for items beyond food, prompting the company to expand its services. Skip recently partnered with Loblaw's Shoppers Drug Mart and Dollarama. Mr. Sgabellone says the expansion efforts come as food delivery apps have hit maturity in the restaurant space. He says retail can mean new revenue streams. DoorDash has forged partnerships with the likes of Staples Canada and Giant Tiger.
