The Globe's guest columnist David Shribman writes that this unusual dynamic is evident as the U.S. midterm-election campaign intensifies while the conflict between Iran and the U.S. remains subdued. Last week, President Trump said he didn't expect a peace agreement until after the Nov. 3 elections. Over the weekend, there were signs he might consider new strikes following the midterms, despite recently rejecting an Iranian proposal for a week-long ceasefire. The American foreign policy and domestic politics are increasingly linked. Despite the President's recent UN speech disavowing this connection, his emerging policies imply otherwise. A CNN poll released last week found that only 29 per cent of American adults approve of the President's handling of foreign affairs. There are very few examples of an overt connection between war policy and electoral politics like this one, and now there's a growing chorus of prominent Republican figures speaking out against the war. For Mr. Trump, the prospect of Democratic control of even one house could narrow his military options.
