The Financial Post reports in its Wednesday, May 27, edition that Ottawa should not invest tens of billions in the Pathways project. The Post's Joe Oliver writes that the project, sponsored by the six largest oil sands companies, the project aims to capture greenhouse gas emissions from over 20 sites and transport them to an underground storage hub near Cold Lake. It is unlikely to meet its public policy objectives and mainly serves political interests. Prime Minister Mark Carney has made Pathways a requirement for approving major oil sands pipeline projects, claiming it will eliminate upstream emissions, which are only 15 per cent of the total. Downstream emissions from consumption account for the rest. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith appears aware of this but felt pressured to comply with the federal government to gain their support. Former Liberal MP Martha Hall Findlay has come out against Pathways, which she spent years helping create. She belatedly admits it would entail significant cost "with, frankly, a negligible effect on global emissions." She says, "Canada's priorities are now clearly economic diversification, national defence, national security -- nothing less than our sovereignty."
