The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, April 21, edition that Alberta's energy sector has long pushed for greater pipeline access to the Pacific coast to diversify its customer base and secure a better price for its product. The Globe's Robert Fife and Emma Graney write that it seems major oil companies have an appetite to boost production to fill a new pipeline. Cenovus Energy and Suncor Energy have recently reported various production records, and have plans to further increase barrels. The hankering to expand is helped by two major factors, says Mike Verney, vice-president at reserve evaluation firm McDaniel & Associates: the high price environment and a global focus on energy security amid the fuel crisis being caused by the Iran war. He says: "The major companies -- Cenovus, Suncor, Imperial Oil -- they're all now talking more materially about big expansions. There was this idea six, 12 months ago about, 'Where's all this growth going to come from?' There's now a much clearer path that's been outlined by a lot of companies." Cenovus chief executive officer Jon McKenzie says along with a new pipeline, Canada requires policies to ensure that industry can grow production to fill the line.
