The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that on Friday chief executive officer Greg Ebel said Enbridge is unwilling to assume the financial risk of developing a new oil pipeline from Alberta to Canada's West Coast. The Globe's Emma Graney writes that Mr. Ebel has no plans to pursue the project. He said, "I don't think investors or the infrastructure companies should be taking on the risk of development in jurisdictions that have historically created a challenge." Mr. Ebel pointed to the defunct Northern Gateway pipeline, which was cancelled in 2016 after the Federal Court of Appeal found Canada failed to consult with first nations on the $7.9-billion pipeline project. Enbridge had invested about $600-million in the project, Mr. Ebel said, "and the rug was pulled out from underneath us." He said: "So that's not the type of risk that we're looking to take on at this time. We don't need to with all the other opportunities." Enbridge secured about $14-billion in projects for 2025. It plans to make final investment decisions on $10-billion to $20-billion in growth projects over the next 24 months. Enbridge is still looking for concrete action. Meanwhile, the company is increasing its renewable power generation.
