The Financial Post reports in its Wednesday edition that Ottawa's environment ministry is considering changes to carbon-pricing rules for industry. The Post's Meghan Potkins writes that Environment and Climate Change Canada aims to strengthen Canada's industrial carbon markets, which have struggled with low prices. However, industry experts warn that these measures could increase costs for energy and manufacturing companies facing global competition. Explorers and Producers Association of Canada president Tristan Goodman says: "It would have very negative consequences for jobs and businesses across Canada, not just within oil and gas. It's an extreme approach that provides very little flexibility to the businesses it would apply to. It's very costly to implement and it looks like it's designed, quite frankly, by a group of academics that don't have any real business sense." The federal environment ministry aims to protect competitiveness while reducing emissions and invites feedback from industries and stakeholders by Jan. 30. The proposals come at a sensitive time as Alberta and Ottawa negotiate a carbon-equivalency agreement under their recent energy memorandum of understanding.
