The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that it could be years before the Alberta government implements all the changes it expects to emerge from an inquiry into renewable energy rules in the province, but Premier Danielle Smith vows that a pause on project approvals will lift at the end of February. The Globe's Emma Graney writes that the United Conservative government ordered in August that the Alberta Utility Commission halt all approvals on renewable energy projects, citing concerns about issues such as how renewables affect land use and viewscapes, and end-of-life rules of solar and wind projects. The commission has until the end of March to complete a review and report back to the government. Utilities and Affordability Minister Nathan Neudorf says the government expects to have a "fairly clear vision" of where Alberta is now and how it needs to change shortly after the commission completes its report. Mr. Neudorf says that will allow the market to proceed with "a pretty good understanding of where we're going." He concedes that it will take a lot longer to put in place specific new regulations and legislation. He says, "It could take two or three years to have every single part and piece written."
