The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Oct. 17, edition that Canadian Tire will soon start selling the distinctive Hudson's Bay point blanket and has committed to directing all proceeds from the sales -- at least $1-million a year -- to indigenous-led initiatives. The Globe's Susan Krashinsky Robertson writes that the company announced on Thursday that it will soon start selling the wool blankets in its stores. The initial release will be a limited quantity, with more blankets to be offered in the future. It is the first product launch since Canadian Tire acquired Hudson's Bay's intellectual property during its bankruptcy proceedings in a $30-million deal announced in May. It will also ensure that an initiative Hudson's Bay launched in 2022, called "Oshki Wupoowane" ("a new blanket" in the Ojibwe language), continues. The partnership directed Hudson's Bay to send proceeds from the blankets' sales to a fund managed by the Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Fund, or DWF, which grants support to various projects focused on indigenous culture, art and education. Chanie Wenjack Fund president Sarah Midanik says the point blanket is a lasting Canadian emblem and a symbol that represents colonial harm.
