The Globe and Mail reports in its Monday edition that the federal government has fined Ezhil Natarajan, the owner of a Canadian Tire store in Etobicoke, Toronto, over $100,000 for violating the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. The Globe's Vanmala Subramaniam writes that Mr. Natarajan is under investigation for allegedly exploiting foreign workers. Employment and Social Development Canada found violations related to mismatched pay and working conditions, as well as workers being assigned to roles different from their employment offers. The Globe reported last year that at least 13 foreign workers had resigned or were fired by Mr. Natarajan after alleging arbitrary wage reductions and being assigned jobs outside their hiring. At that time, ESDC officials were already investigating him. In July, a federal decision against him was issued and made public on ESDC's noncompliance Web page. Mr. Natarajan has not paid a $111,000 penalty imposed on him, making him ineligible for the TFW program. He is also under investigation by Ontario's Ministry of Labour, which is ongoing with no decision made yet. Last year, Mr. Natarajan denied the allegations levelled against him by the workers, and intended to disprove them.
