The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that lawyers for mall owners opposed to a plan to sell 25 former Hudson's Bay store leases to Weihong (Ruby) Liu argued in court that her proposal is "doomed to fail." The Globe's Susan Krashinsky Robertson writes that they criticized her for providing "unreliable" financial forecasts and raised concerns about her ethics and connections to the Chinese government. HBC seeks court approval for a $69.1-million deal to transfer the shuttered locations to Ms. Liu, who intends to launch stores named after herself in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario. Major landlords, including Cadillac Fairview and Oxford Properties, contend that Ms. Liu's lack of retail experience makes her an unsuitable tenant and urged the Ontario Superior Court to reject the deal. Landlords have a significant interest in the lease outcome since HBC was an anchor tenant in their malls. Landlords assert that Ms. Liu's budget is inadequate for important repairs, inventory purchases, distribution costs, hiring hundreds of employees and other expenses. All department stores nationwide have closed, and the company is no longer named Hudson's Bay after selling its intellectual property to Canadian Tire.
