The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that a group of Hudson's Bay landlords claims that the store is pursuing a sale of 25 leases to a British Columbia billionaire solely to satisfy a lender's desire to recover cash. A Canadian Press dispatch to The Globe reports that in recent court documents, they state that Pathlight Capital is the only creditor supporting the sale, suggesting that its backing is motivated by a desire to secure part of Ruby Liu's $69.1-million offer. "All HBC seeks to do here is squeeze out more money for Pathlight," the landlords say in their joint filing. In March, the Bay filed for creditor protection, with court records showing that Pathlight was owed over $95-million, a small part of the approximately $1-billion owed to all creditors. Landlords, including Morguard and Primaris, oppose Ms. Liu's lease takeover, claiming her plans for entertainment and dining spaces in her department store design violate lease terms. They also argue she lacks the necessary expertise and that the project's budget and timelines are unrealistic. All department stores nationwide have closed, and the company is no longer named Hudson's Bay after selling its intellectual property to Canadian Tire.
