The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that the chief justice of the Ontario Superior Court has admonished Weihong (Ruby) Liu, the B.C. billionaire seeking to acquire over two dozen Hudson's Bay Co. leases, for e-mailing the judge overseeing the bankruptcy case. The Globe's Susan Krashinsky Robertson writes that this correspondence was deemed "inappropriate" and potentially "harassing" if it persisted. The July 15 letter from the chief justice's office was filed with the court on Tuesday. In her message to Justice Peter Osborne, Ms. Liu, chairman of Central Walk, and chief executive officer Linda Qin praised the judge while accusing opposing lawyers of "corruption." The correspondence also shows that Hudson's Bay offered to knock $3-million off the price of the leases if Central Walk adhered to certain conditions, including hiring former HBC CEO Liz Rodbell as a consultant. Ms. Rodbell departed the retailer in June. Ms. Liu has already invested $6-million to acquire three leases. However, 25 additional leases from a deal with Hudson's Bay in late May are facing strong opposition from landlords. HBC sold off its intellectual property, including the stripe design, to Canadian Tire in a $30-million deal.
