The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday, July 16, edition that the legal battle over the sale of leases for 25 former Hudson's Bay stores to B.C. billionaire Weihong (Ruby) Liu was delayed when she appeared in court without legal representation. The Globe's Susan Krashinsky Robertson writes that the deal, involving stores in Ontario, Alberta and B.C., is facing significant opposition, with many landlords planning to contest the lease assignments to Ms. Liu. A motion filed by Hudson's Bay's senior lenders seeks to terminate the transaction, arguing that the company should not waste cash on rent and other expenses if the deal is unlikely to succeed. A court monitor also recommended terminating the lease deal in a report filed before the hearing. According to the report, the cost to Hudson's Bay of continuing to pursue the transaction is more than $4.7-million a month for expenses including rent, property taxes and estimated utilities. Ms. Liu has already paid $6-million to take over three store leases in malls where there was no landlord opposition. Hudson's Bay sold off its intellectual property, including the stripe design, to Canadian Tire in a $30-million deal.
