Globe says Canadian Tire deal helps cut HBC's debt

2025-07-09 07:37 ET - In the News

The Globe and Mail reports in its Wednesday edition that some of Hudson's Bay Co.'s senior lenders are asking the court to terminate a controversial deal to sell store leases to Weihong (Ruby) Liu, claiming landlord opposition makes the deal unlikely to succeed and is wasting funds meant for repaying debts. The Globe's Susan Krashinsky Robertson writes that new court documents also request a "super monitor" to oversee the failed retailer's operations, alleging mismanagement during the business winddown. ReStore Capital, representing the senior lenders, has filed a motion for a court hearing next week. ReStore is an investment firm whose parent company, Hilco Global, managed Hudson's Bay liquidation sales. ReStore, on behalf of the syndicate of lenders, closed a $151-million term loan with Hudson's Bay last December to address urgent working capital needs and support HBC LP's acquisition of Neiman Marcus. Some of the loan has already been repaid, including $27.7-million from Hudson's Bay's $30-million intellectual property sale to Canadian Tire, as noted in court filings. ReStore argued that Hudson's Bay has wasted cash and incurred unnecessary costs while winding down its business, reducing its ability to pay debts.
