The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, June 13, edition that Ontario fined recruiter Allison Jones for charging temporary foreign workers fees for placements at a Canadian Tire store in Toronto. The Globe's Vanmala Subramaniam writes that Ms. Jones's businesses, Allison Jones Consulting Services and AJ Immigration Group, must reimburse the workers up to $150,000 for violating the Employment Protection for Foreign Nationals Act, which prohibits such charges. Ms. Jones, who is based in Alberta, was fined $2,000 and ordered to repay the workers' fees, according to a May decision obtained by The Globe. Over 2023 and 2024, eight workers filed complaints with the ministry about how they were hired to work at the Canadian Tire store. Workers had paid Ms. Jones between $7,900 (U.S.) and $12,000 (U.S.) for job placement and work permits, as revealed in contracts obtained by The Globe. They were unaware that charging recruitment fees is illegal. Ms. Jones denied charging illegal fees and said she intends to appeal the decision. Ms. Jones's companies supplied low-wage foreign workers to retail chains across the country, working with at least 45 Canadian Tire stores in Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta.
