The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, May 30, edition that Hudson's Bay's court-supervised sales process, which was intended to generate cash that would go toward paying off the company's senior lenders, has yet to confirm a buyer. The Globe's Susan Krashinsky Robertson writes that there were 17 final qualified bids submitted, according to court documents. As of this weekend, the country's oldest retailer will cease to exist as Canadians know it. Canadian Tire, however, is in a deal to buy the retailer's intellectual property, including its brand name, various company logos and the iconic stripes design featured on Hudson's Bay point blankets, first used in the fur trade. While Canadian Tire has not yet confirmed its plans for the trademarks, chief executive officer Greg Hicks recently suggested his company is not interested in operating stand-alone Bay stores, saying during a conference call earlier this month that it was not pursuing "a wholesale acquisition of HBC's operations," and that this would not be a "good fit" for Canadian Tire. A strategy developed over weeks by former executives, that envisioned Hudson's Bay surviving as a smaller department store chain, has failed to materialize.
