The Globe and Mail reports in its Saturday edition that Mountain Equipment Company will be acquired by textile executive Tim Gu, after months of looking for a buyer. The Globe's Susan Krashinsky Robertson writes that MEC's new ownership includes Mr. Gu and current executives Peter Hlynsky and Chris Speyer. Under the new ownership, MEC intends to shift more of its manufacturing to the domestic market, the company said Friday in a press release.
Mr. Gu is also an investor in Canadian apparel brands Roots and Tilley. He is the founder of E.Star International, which has factories in Canada and overseas that produce apparel and hosiery. The company's website lists Canada Goose, Canadian Tire and Walmart among its clients. Mr. Gu is also chairman of Unisync Group, which produces uniforms and apparel for clients in the public and private sector. Mr. Gu said in a release: "As a lifelong believer in Canadian manufacturing and innovation, I'm proud to join MEC's journey. Together, we'll strengthen its foundation, expand its reach and ensure that MEC remains an essential part of Canada's outdoor culture for generations to come." Mr. Hlynsky said MEC will now work "to stay relevant to the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts."
