The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday edition that Canadian retailers and importers have been scrambling to understand the impact of U.S. tariffs on their businesses as Ottawa declares retaliatory levies. A triple-bylined item led by Susan Krashinsky says that even after U.S. President Donald Trump paused tariffs against most Canadian imports -- again -- businesses are still left dealing with a climate of uncertainty. Canada's own retaliatory tariffs, imposed this week, have in some cases made imports of products more expensive. Retailers have been in discussions with their suppliers, trying to understand whether they will raise prices in response, or might be willing to absorb any higher costs. There is, however, optimism that "Buy Canada" sentiment will help some retailers weather the uncertainty. For Canadian Tire, the stores' owned brands -- Noma, Mastercraft and Paderno -- could benefit from shoppers looking for Canadian products if prices go up for big-name U.S. brands, chief executive officer Greg Hicks told The Globe. "We've been through a lot of disruption in five years, this constant period of disruption in retail," Mr. Hicks said. "This is just going to be another one of those periods of disruption."
